Harnessing artificial intelligence in three key steps

Maximizing AI’s impact for people and business

AI can be a powerful catalyst for business growth and global workforce transformation. With AI-driven insights, automation and decision-making capabilities, organizations are empowered to better understand their workforce, optimize operations, personalize experiences and accelerate innovation.

However, only 15% of companies surveyed by Mercer report utilizing AI effectively throughout their organization. And although AI is top of mind for managers, employees and executives, many don’t know where to start. To reverse this trend, employers must bridge the gaps between what AI can do, what employees need and what business demands. This playbook dives into the three key steps that can help get you there.

Step 1: Strategy and planning

When it comes to incorporating AI in your organization, it’s important to remember successes is not defined by a “go live.” Your goal is not to simply roll out technology – it’s to change how people work. A multinational AI strategy must also consider local compliance regulations, tech readiness by geography and localization.

Step 2: Deploying and adopting AI strategy

Relevance drives technology adoption. When deploying AI, employers must seek to create highly relevant, value-adding workforce experiences. It’s also important to first think about the outcomes you’re seeking, then deploy AI to support them, rather than force fit technology for the sake of it. For instance, are you looking to analyze data in real time to monitor workloads? Detect early signs of burnout? Catch payroll errors and automate other HR workflows?

Step 3: Scaling outcomes and driving global transformation through HR

HR needs to assume the mantle of responsibility and directional strategy that comes with AI and use the technology to transform the function of HR itself. More specifically, AI can help HR move away from transactional tasks to more strategic and meaningful work and, ultimately, help drive positive outcomes for businesses and employees. When scaled through HR, AI can help:

  • Convert diverse data from multiple systems across multiple geographies into structured insights.
  • Automate repetitive tasks, like data entry and scheduling, allowing HR to concentrate on higher-value work.
  • Connect workforce data to productivity and business outcomes, showing the impact of HR initiatives on organizational goals.
