Why skills and why now?

The shifting landscape of the talent market is hard to miss. A huge portion of the workforce – Baby Boomers – are preparing to retire, while many high school and college-aged people are interested in pursuing vocational schools that offer paid, on-the-job training. The number of students enrolling in bachelor’s and associate’s degree programs is also falling. In response to these trends, employers must consider a skills-based approach to sourcing talent and filling gaps.

Elevating the importance of skills makes it possible to uncover candidates who may otherwise have been overlooked because they did not have a specific degree or industry experience, but still possess the skills needed to succeed. In fact, 90% of companies using a skills-based hiring method report reducing their mis-hires, and 94% agree that skills-based hiring is more predictive of on-the-job success than résumes1.
